Vocabulary Lesson Time!

God is good, all the time, and all the time, God is good. Many of us are familiar with that phrase. So much in fact that it has almost become a cliche'. God is good. Yeah, God's good. Take out an o, you get God. Simple.
Dictionary.com (very reliable) alone has 47 adjective definitions, 1 interjection, one adverb, eight idioms, and literally thousands of links for the small, overused word we hear everyday: good. Oh, that potato soup was really good. Yes, my grade on the test was good. The human video practice was good. The word is everywhere! And not only that, but it is misused, as is amazing, awesome, great, powerful, etc. But the word actually means morally excellent; virtuous; righteous; pious. Substitute those words in the above sentences. Oh, that potato soup was really virtuous. Yes, my grade on the test was righteous. The human video practice was both pious and morally excellent. Doesn't exactly fit, does it?

If good is the same thing as morally excellent, and morally means ethical standards and excellent means possessing outstanding quality or superior merit, then can practice really be good?

If good is the same thing as virtuous, and virtuous means conforming to moral and ethical principles, then can potato soup really be good?

If good is the same thing as righteous, and righteous means characterized by uprightness or morality, then can your grade really be good?

If good is the same thing as pious, and pious means having or showing a dutiful spirit of reverence for God or an earnest wish to fulfill religious obligations, then can practice really be good?

Hm, I'm thinking that maybe we've misused the word. What about you? Do you have any words that you think are being misused and abused? Lemme know.
